Part of the soapberry family, Ackee is a tropical fruit popular in both Africa and the Caribbean. With a soft, fleshy inside resembling a pair of human lungs, Ackee is a popular companion in West Indian dishes. Its distinct sweetness elegantly complements foods such as saltfish (saltfish and ackee is Jamaica’s national dish), but the berries themselves can be consumed as part of a fruit cocktail or on their own.
