Throughout quarantine, I was lucky to get to know my mom more and the foods she would eat growing up in Sandakan, Malaysia. We spent time together creating a collection of her famous recipes and I illustrated it as a sharable pocket zine that recalls the red pockets (hong baos) family members would gift us during celebratory dinners.
Now everyone always asks what the family secret to her cooking is – and well, it is her. We can’t guarantee that these recipes turn out exactly like hers because she is what makes them special. And I am sure that goes for everyone’s own family cooking and traditions!
