I am deeply moved by the geopolitical turmoil in Asia, especially the protests in Hong Kong, and hope my work can help elevate their cause and our understanding of what is truly at stake.
I painted the two pieces submitted (Protest No. 1, Protest No. 2) during the summer of 2020, following the introduction of the controversial national security law in Hong Kong. Working from powerful news images, my goal was to capture the collective humanity of those struggling selflessly for freedom, while honoring the incredible sacrifices made by the young men in these photos.
ARTIST BIO
I am a Chinese-Canadian painter living in Toronto. I grew up in a smaller city in Hubei province, and came to Canada (Quebec) to study animation on exchange. After graduating, I stayed to work in Montreal, and eventually moved to Toronto and became a citizen. For the past 4 years, I have been working full-time as an artist, and I exhibit my works in local group shows, fair, and online.
