x-in-waiting is an ongoing performance for the camera series created during the COVID-19 quarantine in 2020, and is currently being developed into an app for the mobile phone. The work asks viewers to wait with the artist in separate videos for eight minutes while he symbolically engages in a form of meditation/occupation of his choosing. These performances involve everyday household items and situations found within the home under quarantine scenarios. These sites will be familiar to the audience as they are a reflection of spaces that we have all been sequestered into in order to ride out the pandemic. The common thread connecting each eight-minute performance are the visual aspects of the artist creating a “waiting” performance while the artist is on his phone passing time (mimicking what the viewer is currently doing with watching the performance on their phone).

x-in-waiting refers to the period of stasis that occurs for something (in this case, the variable ‘x’) to become something else. For this work the “x” stands in for whatever occupation the artist is consumed with while ‘in waiting’. (This also extends the “x” of uncertainty to pertain to where we might find ourselves, society, and daily living conditions at the end of this pandemic.)

ARTIST BIO

I am a Canadian multimedia, installation, and performance artist. I received a Masters in Fine Art from The Slade School of Fine Art in London, UK and received a Bachelors in Fine Art from the Ontario College of Art and Design. My exhibition record includes participation with Flux Night 2012 (Nuit Blanche Atlanta, Georgia) with a multi-channel video installation, Small Meteorites, projected within five vehicles; a city wide art installation commissioned and curated by the Duncan and Jordanstone College of Art and Design, funded by the Scottish Arts Council (2010); a solo exhibition at the Monster Truck Gallery in Dublin Ireland (2015); a Triangle Arts Trust residency and solo exhibition at the Kuona Trust Gallery in Nairobi, Kenya (2010); a special selection honour at Videoholica 2010; a residency and solo exhibition at MART Gallery Dublin, Ireland funded by the Ontario Arts Council (2015). I completed two solo exhibitions in 2018: one at YYZ Artist Outlet, Toronto, Canada and the other at the Orleans Gallery (Ottawa School of the Arts), Ottawa, Canada. In September 2018 I also exhibited a new performance piece Oracular Spectacular for Locust Projects, Miami, Florida, USA for their 20/20 exhibition, in celebration of their 20 year anniversary. Most recently I participated in the inaugural Zero Gravity International Performance Art Festival in Edmonton, Canada (2019). Currently, I am working on a new series of performative sculptures and installations that was generously funded by the Canada Council for the Arts.
