My short film alongside two triptychs document a select few pieces from my family’s jewelry collection (aka a small suitcase stuffed into the back of my mom’s closet).
I don’t know if it’s a Chinese parent thing or just a parent thing in general, but my parents speak very little of their past, be it their personal history or our family history. Being in quarantine, I’ve been spending more time with them at home than I have in a long while – probably not since I was a baby – this time and space allowing for conversation and curiosity. I’ve always known of this collection that has been passed down from our ancestors, to be passed down to my siblings and I, to be passed down to our children, but I never knew where said jewelry was, what it looked like, or where it came from. Until now! Discover some of the Fung Family Jewelry with me for the first time in this short film.
The two triptychs included with the film are of my mother, sister and I wearing the jewelry.
