ActiVisions: Trans Histories and Activism, 1960s-1990s

An exhibit on the histories of Toronto’s trans people through the decades.

In this one-of-a-kind exhibition, The ArQuives opens its doors for the public to experience their Trans Collections. Curated by Tobaron Waxman, this exhibition explores a selection of trans histories of resilience in Toronto from the 1960s to the 1990s.

Waxman offers a unique lens into Toronto’s trans community histories, focusing on the fight for access to trans-aware health care, language, imagery, and mutual aid. The ArQuives Trans Collections collects memories, art, and documents to share histories of community activism and trans triumphs under extreme circumstances.

ABOUT THE CURATOR
Tobaron Waxman is an interdisciplinary artist who sings.Tobaron’s projects interrogate how borders and notions of citizenship make moral and ethical claims on our bodies. Tobaron’s works have been exhibited and published internationally; grappling with issues of border and embodiment, such as migrancy and houselessness, nation and the state, and gender and racial passing. Fellowships and awards have included generous support from Franklin Furnace, Canada Council, Kulturlabor ICI Berlin, Akademie der Künst der Welt/Köln, New Museum NYC, invited participant of the first Master Class for Trans Voice at Opera Berlin, and the inaugural Audience Award of Jewish Museum NY for the 8-hour endurance performance Opshernish, accessed by Leslie Lohman LGBT Museum in 2022. In 2013, Tobaron founded The Intergenerational LGBT Artist Residency, as a combined curatorial, relational/live art, and sociopolitical praxis.

The ArQuives’ Trans Collection is a resource and catalyst for those who strive for a future world where 2SLGBTQ+ people are accepted, valued, and celebrated.

Myseum of Toronto is proud to host The ArQuives in this year’s Intersections festival, a city-wide celebration of art, culture, and community. The ArQuives along with curator Tobaron Waxman have created ActiVisions.
