We are a city of record breakers, rabble rousers, and game changers. Ride the highs and the lows of Toronto’s sports histories in our latest exhibition.
Sports have shaped our city for generations — from infamous bat flips and buzzer-beating three-pointers, to Stanley Cup curses and fairweather fandoms. Whether they bring us together or reflect our divisions, the sports we play tell us a story.
Winners & Losers: Sports Histories of Toronto was an exhibition that ran in our downtown exhibition space between November 2023 and March 2024.
In this exhibit you will learn about Toronto through hockey, lacrosse, basketball, boxing, football, and baseball.

About the Curators
Adam Bunch
Adam Bunch is an award-winning storyteller who brings the history of Toronto and Canada to life. He’s the author of The Toronto Book of the Dead and The Toronto Book of Love, the host of the Canadiana documentary series, and the creator of the Toronto History Weekly newsletter, the Festival of Bizarre Toronto History, and the Toronto Dreams Project. His work popularizing Canadian history was recognized with the Governor General’s History Award for Popular Media — the Pierre Berton Award.
Morgan Campbell
Morgan Campbell joined CBC Sports in 2021 as the first Senior Contributor after 18 standout years at the Toronto Star. In 2004 he won the National Newspaper Award for “Long Shots,” a serial narrative about a high school basketball team from Scarborough. Later created, hosted and co-produced “Sportonomics,” a weekly video series examining the business of Sport. And he spent his last two years at the Star authoring the Sports Prism initiative, a weekly feature covering the intersection of sports, race, business, politics and culture. Morgan is also a TedX lecturer, and a frequent contributor to several CBC platforms, including the extremely popular and sorely-missed Sports Culture Panel on CBC Radio Q. His work has been featured in the New York Times, the Literary Review of Canada, and the Best Canadian Sports Writing anthology.
Sam Laskaris
Sam Laskaris has been a Toronto-based freelance writer since 1986. His articles have been published in more than 250 newspapers and magazines across Canada and the United States. Sam specializes in sports writing but also writes about numerous topics including news, business, entertainment and economic developments for various publications. His first two sports books, on NFL player Aaron Rodgers and U.S. gymnast Simone Biles, will be published next summer.

Exhibition Design
elsonstudio
elsonstudio is the design practice of Christine Elson. Trained as an architect, Christine has been working with museums, galleries and other cultural clients for over 10 years, developing engaging exhibitions, installations and activations. Her studies in literature, as well as her experience working in the theatre world and film industry, have contributed to a deep understanding of the design of narrative spaces.
